The ocean is the blue heart of the planet, containing 97% of the planet's water and producing at least half of its oxygen. The Maldives, a predominantly water-based ocean nation, is home to some of the world's most diverse marine biodiversity. The South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), where Sun Island Resort & Spa is located, and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, where Royal Island Resort & Spa is located, are both home to Villa Hotels & Resorts properties.
The 8th of June is designated as World Oceans Day, which serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our oceans are and how critical it is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting our oceans and the planet. Villa Hotels & Resorts understands the critical importance of protecting the ocean's fragile coral reefs and marine life.
A healthy ocean is an important part of the solution to climate change and the current environmental crises. Villa Resorts has organized a variety of ocean conservation initiatives to raise awareness and pledge commitment to preserving the fragile marine environment for the future, acknowledging the responsibility to promote harmony with nature.
The resorts have organized reef clean-ups on each of the islands to collect any debris and plastics for recycling, and resort guests are encouraged to participate. All of the plastic will be donated to Parley for the Oceans, a non-profit dedicated to addressing major threats to our oceans and fighting for environmental protection through recycling and global projects.
The theme for this year's World Oceans Day is Ocean Revitalization and Collective Action. The annual event brings millions of people from all over the world together to raise awareness and make a difference. Furthermore, the goal for this year's conservation effort is to protect at least 30% of the planet by 2030. Villa Hotels & Resorts is proud to support the 30x30 nature petition, which aims to protect 30% of the planet's land and ocean by 2030, as part of a global movement to protect the ocean.
