The popularity of Maldives as a holiday destination among Indians has shown significant increase in recent years, thanks to the boost in air-connectivity between the two nations. India was the fastest growing source market for Maldives tourism in 2019, with a total of more or less, 90,474 tourists, similarly as of 2018.
The Maldives, mainly being a stay-in destination, has emerged as the most popular choice among Indians to take their first post-pandemic international break. The Indian market held third place in terms of arrivals to the Maldives with a market share of 8.8% up until May 2019. And right now, what the world needs unlike never before is a holiday during these hectic times.
From a survey by Pickyourtail to study travel trends for 2020 and 2021, it is evident that 52% modern Indian travellers, across the age groups of 20-34 years and 35-44 years, are hoping to take their first post-pandemic holiday before the end of 2020, and are likely to choose destinations that offer high safety measures.
The borders of Maldives along with 42 of its exclusive resorts were opened for international travel and tourists on July 15th, with safety procedures implemented in all resorts according to updates issued by the Maldives Health Protection Agency (HPA). And more than that, some resorts in Maldives even offer free PCR testing for guests, which are sure to appeal to the Indian market.
The Maldives has always topped the list as the most popular destination among young Indian couples planning their honeymoon or family get-away. It has also been one of the key destinations of high-profile Bollywood celebrities such as superstar Shah Rukh Khan and actress Malaika Arora, who have helped boost the Maldives popularity among Indian holiday-makers by drawing media attention.
Hence, it can be expected that Maldives will be welcoming more Indians before the end of this year as it is found that at least 70% travellers are willing to spend more on enhanced on-trip safety, which is exactly what Maldives offers.
