Marriott International has announced the appointment of Amila Handunwala, the General Manager of W Maldives, as the new Chairman of the Marriott Maldives Business Council, effective January 4, 2024. Handunwala takes over from Renato De Oliveira, General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, and becomes the third Chairman in the council's history.
The Marriott Maldives Business Council, a vital part of Marriott International’s global network, is committed to supporting the company’s mission of building the most loyal travel community. It brings together general managers and associates from Marriott’s diverse portfolio of brands to collaborate on shared goals, such as promoting sustainable business practices, enhancing market performance, and driving environmental and social initiatives.
Handunwala, with over 18 years of experience in luxury hospitality, is known for his visionary leadership in resort management and sustainability. At W Maldives, he led transformative changes, including the introduction of a biogas plant and a push for a 100% single-use plastic-free environment. His leadership in sustainability will guide the council’s continued efforts to impact both the local community and the tourism industry positively.
Under his leadership, the Business Council will continue Marriott's focus on community engagement and sustainability. Notably, in December 2024, the council renewed its partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the Sister Islands Initiative, a project that promotes sustainable development and community empowerment.
Handunwala’s appointment marks a new chapter for Marriott’s operations in the Maldives, with an emphasis on strengthening local partnerships, promoting sustainable tourism, and fostering positive community relationships.
