Atmosphere Core, a leading international hospitality company, is making waves with its sustainability efforts across the Maldives. With a focus on community engagement, operational efficiency, resource management, and environmental conservation, Atmosphere Core is setting a new standard for eco-friendly luxury travel.

Commitment to Sustainability

Atmosphere Core's dedication to sustainability can be seen in many innovative initiatives, such as renewable energy installations and water-saving technologies. Each resort also undertakes unique projects like the vertical hydroponic garden at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO and the in-house biogas system at OBLU SELECT Sangeli.

“Sustainability isn't just a choice for us; it's our core philosophy,” says Shrikant Dash, Deputy Managing Director for Corporate at Atmosphere Core. “We focus on reusing, reducing, and recycling. From paperless, app-based booking and check-in systems to handmade candied orange peels at our spas and kitchen gardens maintained by our teams, every decision we make aims to preserve the natural beauty of the Maldives.”

Positive Community Impact

Understanding the importance of supporting local communities, Atmosphere Core has made significant strides through the Atmosphere Foundation, a non-profit organization. Over the past two years, the foundation has achieved several key milestones, including building a training kitchen for special needs students, running reading programs for nearly 7,200 young people, and supporting health screening programs for almost 600 senior citizens on local islands.

One standout initiative is the Bamboo for Climate Change Mitigation project, which involves planting bamboo, known for its high carbon absorption rate, both on resort grounds and in local communities. So far, over 4,000 bamboo seedlings have been donated and planted across 27 islands, significantly contributing to climate protection efforts.

Harnessing Solar Power

Atmosphere Core is leading a solar energy revolution in the Maldives. Since setting up its first marine and rooftop solar systems at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO in 2019, the company has expanded solar energy production across its resorts. As of May 2024, the resorts have installed 8,890 solar panels, producing a cumulative 16,500 MWh of clean energy. This has saved over 4.4 million liters of diesel and reduced CO2 emissions by nearly 12,000 metric tonnes.

Coral Conservation Efforts

Environmental care is central to Atmosphere Core’s philosophy, particularly in coral conservation. Seven of the nine resorts have active coral conservation programs, with four resorts employing dedicated marine biologists. In 2023 alone, 279 coral frames were installed, hosting approximately 13,436 coral fragments. Continuous monitoring has shown promising growth, with coral gardens attracting diverse marine life including Parrot Fish, Snappers, Eagle Rays, and Sharks.

Green Globe Certification

All of Atmosphere Core’s resorts have achieved Green Globe Certification for environmental sustainability, with OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI and OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO receiving gold certifications. Green Globe Certification, a leading sustainability certification for resorts, requires compliance with up to 380 environmental criteria.

Atmosphere Core's sustained efforts in promoting eco-friendly tourism and supporting local communities set a high standard for the hospitality industry. Their initiatives ensure that the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Maldives are preserved for future generations, while also providing unforgettable experiences for guests.

Conclusion

Atmosphere Core continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability through innovative projects and community initiatives. By integrating eco-friendly practices into every aspect of their operations, they are not only enhancing the guest experience but also contributing to the preservation of the Maldives' natural beauty.
