In a vibrant commemoration of World Tourism Day on September 27th, the Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) from six islands in Baa Atoll orchestrated a spectacular Alun Balun Resale Market at Baa Maalhos. This special edition, supported by Maalhos Council and Soneva Namoona, marked the first-ever participation of all islands in Baa Atoll.
Sustainable Resale Initiative:
The Alun Balun Resale Market, initiated in Baa Atoll and recently introduced in Noonu Atoll with the support of Soneva Namoona, gathered over 400 secondhand items within just five days from Male' alone. The combined efforts of both markets have generated an impressive revenue exceeding MVR 30,000 for the participating WDCs.
Empowering Women and Fostering Sustainability:
Beyond being a marketplace, the Alun Balun Resale Market is a cultural catalyst fostering a culture of reuse, resource conservation, and women empowerment. It acts as a bridge connecting WDCs across seven islands, offering reasonably priced secondhand goods, prolonging product lifespans, and reducing landfill waste.
Market Day Highlights:
The market day in Maalhos unfolded at Maalhos School, featuring an array of secondhand items like clothes, shoes, accessories, books, household items, and toys.
