On 10th April, 71 Maldivians from various cities of Bangladesh and Nepal have arrived home on a special flight of the Bangladesh Armed Forces from Dhaka. Most of these Maldivians are medical students or doctors in training, who were stranded due to the lockdowns and travel restrictions imposed to control the spread of COVID-19 in Bangladesh and Nepal.
Further, along with 100 metric tons of food, medicine and medical equipment, Bangladesh also assisted Maldives by sending a medical team consisting of doctors and medical officers. This was in response to a request by the Maldives following the worsening situation of the COVID-19 in Maldives. ‘This kind gesture by the Bangladesh Government is well-timed and much appreciated by the Government and people of Maldives,’ states Foreign Ministry.
‘The Government of Maldives extends its deep appreciation to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff, General Aziz Ahmed, Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen, MP, the Government and people of Bangladesh for their timely assistance in repatriating the Maldivians and sending the medical team.’
