Utility Regulatory Authority Bill was submitted to the Parliament by South Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Saneef. This will see an authority established to administer and arrange public services to formulate the powers of the authority, plan public services, establish general rules and regulations and take action against those violating the laws and policies of providing public services.
Public services include water supply, sewerage, electricity and waste management. The bill is aimed to allow better quality public services, accessible and trusted by the public and carried out successfully and sustainably. Apart from creating policies and regulations, creating a competitive environment, providing licenses and ensuring that these licenses are followed through, the authority is also responsible to monitor the prices. This is an effective step towards improving public services in Maldives.
