The prices of onions are rising at a disturbing rate in Maldives. Once costing MVR 10-15 a kilogram, it is currently priced around MVR 60-70. The price of onions increased around October due to controls levied on Indian exported onions. However, discussions held between the governments of the two countries saw the price of onions once again reduce to normal by the end of October.
Yet again, Maldives is struggling with the return of the rise of onion prices. This time the cause of it is bad weather experienced in Indian onion producing states. States such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and West Bengal are experiencing heavy rainfall that has damaged some of the crops and raised the price of onions in India.
