The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives has released the sixth edition of its flagship publication, 'Island Life.' ‘The 'Island Life' magazine is a collection of stories that shed light on the Maldives' key development challenges and the work UNDP is doing with our partners to address these issues. Perspectives from the government, civil society, development partners, and stories from the passionate communities and individuals with whom UNDP works are all included in the publication.
The magazine launching event hosted at Velana International Airport on June 12th, by the Maldives Airport Company Limited, was attended by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Special Envoy for Climate Change, Ms. Sabra Ibrahim Noordeen, UN Resident Coordinator in the Maldives, Ms. Catherine Haswell, and was presided by UNDP Resident Representative in the Maldives, Mr. Enrico Gaveglia. Prior to the event, the magazine was also presented to the Minister for Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom.
Prior to the publication of the magazine, UNDP Maldives and Island Aviation Services Limited (Maldivian – The Maldives' National Airline) signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) to collaborate on an advocacy campaign to promote the magazine, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focusing on climate adaptation and mitigation, as well as improving governance and livelihoods in the Maldives.
“To augment partnerships for development, we have initiated conversations with key industry leaders and partners here in the Maldives and abroad, who can help amplify our messages out of the country beyond the tourists visiting these wonderful shores. In doing so, we aim at leveraging, influencing, and generating a different kind of support for Maldives. One that talks to consumer responsibility and appreciation for our nature,” Sharing his insights over the course is the UNDP Maldives Resident Representative, Mr. Enrico Gaveglia.
In the Maldives, UNDP partnerships help to advance the national agenda and achieve national development goals. The magazine 'Island Life' highlights our ongoing efforts and partnership coalitions in this regard. UNDP's new value offer to the Maldives, as part of UNDP's new Country Programme Document for the Maldives 2022-2026 - which is strongly aligned with the UN Cooperation Framework and national development priorities - reaffirms the long-standing partnership between UNDP and the Government, building on several decades of support, and lays the groundwork for accelerated and focused development cooperation.
