On 25th June 2020, the annual Day of the Seafarer will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. This year, the Day of the Seafarer campaign calls on Member States to recognize seafarers as key workers – and to provide them with the support, assistance and travel options open to all key workers during the pandemic.
Seafarers play a very important role in the economy since they are essential to shipping and hence, their sacrifices and issues need to be acknowledged. Many seafarers have been away from home for months and are unsure when they will be able to return home due to travel restrictions.
Marking this day, Minister of Transport in the Maldives, Aishath Nahula reveals that shipping and seafaring contributes to inflow of foreign currency into the country. Since it is an important industry, developing this sector is included in the government’s strategic plan and works have already commenced.
The Minister announced that works are ongoing to launch the Seafarers Identification Document. Discussions are being carried out with local and foreign groups in order to create job opportunities for seamen and those who want to work in super yachts. In fact, training works of 30 navigation officers and 30 engine officers have commenced.
