Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has welcomed PM Narendra Modi’s initiative to create a COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund and his pledge of USD 10 million. The government of Maldives also joined the initiative and has pledged USD 2, 00,000 to address issues arising due to the pandemic.
As a humanitarian gesture, Government of India provided immediate assistance to the Maldives to deal will the coronavirus situation, which has been declared as a pandemic by World Health Organization. On 13th March, the SAARC country sent a large Composite COVID 19 medical relief team.
Despite the temporary export ban, India also gifted essential medicines. “These humanitarian gestures are a concrete example of India’s Neighborhood First and Maldives’ India First policy in action.”
The Maldives called India a ‘true friend in need’ after New Delhi announced to assist the island nation with essential medicines and medical relief team in the wake of coronavirus. Earlier this year, India also provided 30,000 doses of Measles vaccine within 72 hours of the request by Maldives.
