Creating the First Protected Areas in Laamu- MUI by Six Senses Laamu

The Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) at Six Senses Laamu, founded on the principle of uniting people and organizations with a shared vision for the conservation of the marine environment in Laamu Atoll, aims to create the first protected areas in the atoll.

On this year’s UN World Oceans Day 2020, the theme is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean”. There is a focus on calling for world leaders to commit to protecting 30% of oceans by 2030, to combat the climate crisis and protect marine biodiversity.

By creating the first protected areas in Laamu, MUI will safeguard the future of the community and use this as a blueprint for sustainable development in other atolls across the country. “This is an initial step towards protecting 30% by 2030, made possible through our partnerships with Blue Marine Foundation, Manta Trust and Olive Ridley Project, and the support of Six Senses Laamu.”

According to MUI, Environmental protection is fundamental to the future of the Maldives. Regardless of this, there are minimal protected areas, and due to uncontrolled overexploitation, the Maldives’ marine ecosystems are at risk of degrading and losing their capacity to support the people who depend on them.

While these organizations and communities carry out several unique initiatives to protect the oceans, why don’t you step forward and do your part? Sign The Petition and share the message, on social and within your community. Take a moment today to educate others on the importance of marine protection.
