Every year on 8th June, World Oceans Day is celebrated to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. That they are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. Shangri-La Hotels is one of the top hospitality companies committed to preserving and protecting the beautiful beaches where their hotels are located.
Shangri-La’s property in Maldives, Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, is a tropical sanctuary south of the equator. An exclusive all-villa hideaway with endless recreational activities, unforgettable dining experiences and a spectacular 9-hole golf course. The luxury resort is also dedicated to sustainability.
In 2019, Shangri-La Group implemented a group-wide ban on plastic straws and stirrers, switched to glass bottled water for more venues and outlets, and introduced greener packaging for in-room slippers, which resulted in the elimination of six million single-use straws and plastic stirrers. Further, 11 tons of plastic packaging was saved per year by switching to paper wrapping for in-room slippers. Eleven properties now serve in-room water in glass bottles.
Shangri-La is committed to conserving and protecting the biodiversity of the areas their hotels operate for present and future generations to enjoy. Sanctuary, Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project aims to make a concerted effort towards biodiversity conservation and habitat protection. Properties work on individualized projects which are developed, tracked and monitored after a biodiversity assessment. To date, there are 18 Sanctuary projects in place.
Shangri-La Group committed to sustainable menus at restaurants and bars by achieving Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody certification for all Shangri-La and sister-branded properties in Mainland China and Hong Kong. In 2012, Shangri-La Group introduced a Sustainable Seafood Policy. As part of the policy, the Group announced it would cease serving shark fin in all of its operated restaurants and for banqueting events.
To keep the oceans clean and healthy Shangri-La Group properties and colleagues organize regular beach and ocean cleanups. Coastal properties such as Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, Mauritius arranges routine beach cleanups along the shoreline as well as on the resort’s private island Ilot Mangenie, while hotels located in urban destinations such as Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei organize beach cleanups outside the city.
“Shangri-La Group understands the importance of the world’s oceans and will continue to help protect and preserve them as well as help nurture the marine life that inhabit them.”
