The tropical islands of the Maldives are beautifully scattered on the Indian Ocean, grouped into 26 atolls, out of which Thaa Atoll is home to some of the most mesmerizing places in the country. The atoll has 13 uninhabited islands, including the longest deserted island in the Maldives.
You will be surprised by the historical sites here, such as the grave of Sultan Osman I, who ruled Maldives for only six months before being banished in 1388 to the island of Guraidhoo, where his tomb was discovered in 1922. On the island of Dhiyamigili you can walk around the ruins of a palace that belonged to Mohammed Imaaduddeen II - a sultan who founded one of the archipelago’s longest ruling dynasties during the 18th century.
Thaa Atoll features some great dive spots that are great for both beginners and experts. Experienced divers can enjoy the strong currents at Gorgonian Garden and manta ray encounters, also return for a night dive to meet ghost pipefish hidden in the colorful coral garden. However, with little current, lots of macro life, and the possibility of a manta ray, the Caribbean Garden is for all divers.
Apart from diving, Thaa Atoll is also well-known among surfers. The waves of Inside Mikado surf spot typically range from 2-6 feet, peeling down the line with short, pristine barrels. Other surf spots where you are sure to have a great time include Bowling Alley on the west coast of Thaa Atoll and Malik’s, located on the somewhat secluded Hirilandhoo Island.
The recreational activities are endless in this region. With 13 uninhabited islands, you can have a unique experience on a deserted island. The longest uninhabited island in the Maldives - Fahala Island, is located on the eastern edge of Thaa Atoll and is blessed with beautiful white beaches. Imagine taking some stunning pictures here. Perfect for a romantic vacation or even a fun adventure family trip.
