In a very special ceremony held on August 6, 2020 at the President’s Office, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom took an oath as the new Minister of Tourism of Maldives. President Ibrahim Solih handed over the letter of appointment following the ceremony. Prior to Dr. Mausoom, Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Islmail had been the acting Minister after the dismissal of Mr. Ali Waheed.
Dr. Mausoom has been working in the tourism industry since 1985 and has held a number of significant positions in the Cabinet. His most recent post was that of Maldives’ High Commisioner to Singapore, non-resident High Commisioner of Maldives to Commonwealth of Australia and as the non-resident High Commissioner of Maldives to New Zealand. He now has been released of these duties so that he may fulfill his new cabinet responsibilities.
In 2008, he served a term as the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation; and he had also held the portfolio of Minister of Environment, Energy and Water. Before that, he had been the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation and a Member of Parliament, representing the Kelaa Constituency.
Dr. Mausoom was also previously appointed as a Board Member of Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), State Trading Organization (STO), and Maldives Transport & Construction Company (MTCC). He served at the Tourism Promotion Advisory Council, Villa College Council and College Council of Maldives as a Council Member.
The tourism industry has well known the services of Dr. Mausoom on various notable projects. He has been a lecturer, trainer and consultant of the industry for over 10 years now. He was actively involved in the development of the 3rd Tourism Master Plan. In addition, Dr. Mausoom is the Lead Author of Ministry of Tourism’s Publication ‘35 Years of Tourism’.
Dr. Mausoom spent a decade abroad for education which was dedicated to the tourism industry, exploring the interdependency and the relationship between the government and the private sector in sustainable tourism development for his doctoral thesis. He has faced challenges in every aspect of the industry during his years of service, but is passionate like no other.
