The UAE was selected by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to host COP 28 in 2023. The airline has done a sizable number of study eco-flights over the last three years that show the potential for carbon emission savings of up to 72 percent on a single flight. Etihad became the first airline to acquire commercial finance based on verifiable compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in addition to the airline's extensive testing and innovation program (UN SDGs). With the beginning of the Etihad Mangroves Forest initiative, the airline aimed to create carbon-absorbing forests in the nations where it operates.
