Gan International Airport, originally built by the British as a staging post for its RAF in the 1950s, was handed over to the Maldivian government in 1976 with nearly the equivalent of an ICAO code 4D air strip and facilities. Today, the International Airport is slowly becoming a second hub for international flights making their way to Maldives.
Quite recently, Gan International Airport has made news for reaching an impressive milestone by becoming the very first airport in Maldives to join Aviation Fuel Joint Inspection Group where the airport reached the JIG Inspection Criteria.
The Joint Inspection Group (JIG), founded in the early 1970s, is the world's leading organization for the development of aviation fuel supply standards, encompassing the entire aviation fuel supply chain from refinery to wing-tip. Its standards are adhered to by over 100 member organizations worldwide, which operate at over 2750 airports and supply and distribution locations in over 100 countries. Their mission is to improve aviation safety around the world by reaching out to more aviation fuel handling organizations.
With GAN International Airport reaching this milestone, it shows the extent of development in the country. Moreover, 2022 makes it a special year in Maldives as we are celebrating our golden jubilee in tourism industry! Special treatments are planned by the government for the whole year as tourists get to indulge in the luxuries Maldives has to offer.
