On Wednesday the November 24th, the 'Re-imagining Tourism' project was launched, with the goal of transforming tourism in the Maldives with an emphasis on diversification.
Minister of Tourism, Dr.Abdulla Mausoom, officially launched the project at the L. Fonadhoo Center for Education. While the 'one island, one resort' model has proven to be extremely successful, he remarked during the ceremony that the 'Re-imagining Tourism' project intends to provide chances and advantages to Maldivians directly.
The 'Re-imagining Tourism' project is a collaboration between the Maldives government and UNDP to research, create, and test ideas to make tourism more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. The Ministry of Tourism and UNDP Maldives signed a contract in April for the project, which aimed to give local councils a bigger role in tourism planning and enable the establishment of formal links between the tourism sector and traditional knowledge and livelihoods, allowing women and youth to participate more fully.
Over the course of 18 months, the 'Re-imagining Tourism' project will be conducted in Laamu Atoll, with an emphasis on the local tourism segment. The project is supported by UNDP Core Funds and the Rapid Financing Facility, and it is part of UNDP's increased commitment to SIDS nations' COVID-19 sustainable recovery.
