Velana International Airport is the main gateway to majority of the travelers flying in to the Maldives. It also houses the seaport where the world’s largest seaplane operations take place, transferring guests to and from the airport to their destination islands dotted across the nation.
On January 2, 2022, VIA set a new record of total air traffic movements recorded on a single day at the airport. Inclusive of 233 runway and 593 seaplane movements, there were 826 movements on Sunday. This shattered the previous record set on January 5, 2020 which peaked at 811 movements.
This new record amplifies the ambitious goals for travel in the timeline of the Golden Year of Tourism in the Maldives.
