Health and Safety Measures at Velana International Airport Receives ACI Accreditation

Velana International Airport (VIA) has always served as one of the main gate-way for passengers traveling to and from the mesmerizing chain of islands in the Indian Ocean. Today, VIA proudly harbors the biggest seaplane operations in the world and is connected to over 35 international destinations and serves to more than 30 international airlines.

As of 1st September 2020, the national airport of Maldives received Airport Health Accreditation from Airport Council International (ACI). The certificate was awarded through a special letter sent by ACI World’s Director, General Luis Felipe de Oliveira to MACL’s CEO and MD Gordon Stewart on Monday, congratulating the CEO and the MACL team for the achievement.

The ACI AHA programme provides an assessment of how far airports have aligned their health measures are with the ACI Aviation Business Restart and Recovery guidelines and ICAO Council Aviation Restart Task Force recommendations along with industry best practices.

This certificate recognizes Velana International Airport to be the second airport in the Asia Pacific Region to receive ACI Airport Health Accreditation (AHA). MACL’s top-most priority is to safeguard the health of both its staffs and passengers. Henceforth, since the arise of the global pandemic, Velana Airport has implemented precautionary measures throughout the airport to establish a safe environment for its passengers and the team.

All passengers, whether arriving or departing are required to complete the Health Screening procedure before entering the airport, with non- contact thermal screening or temperature checks carried out for 100% of the passenger and staff at the entrance to the Terminals and the Arrivals.

To maintain public safety and physical distance requirement, tenia barriers and floor signage and information to passengers are displayed everywhere in the airport, and moreover, terminal seating will be arranged, in a way that ensures social distancing between seated passengers, along with additional partitions and physical barriers to avoid unnecessary contact.
