Holiday Inn Kandooma Launches Manta Month with Conservation-Focused Activities

Thursday 29th of August 2024

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives is set to launch the inaugural ‘Kandooma Manta Month’ this September, offering a range of activities aimed at raising awareness about manta ray conservation. The month-long celebration builds on the success of last year’s week-long event, which began on World Manta Day and received an overwhelmingly positive response from guests.

Mark Eletr, General Manager of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, expressed excitement about dedicating an entire month to celebrating manta rays. "This initiative is not just about raising awareness—it’s about giving our guests the chance to connect with nature, learn about conservation, and contribute to the preservation of one of the ocean’s most majestic species," he said.

Manta rays, known as ‘Madi’ in the Maldivian Dhivehi language, are the largest rays in the ocean. The Maldives is home to the world’s largest population of reef manta rays, with over 5,831 individuals recorded. Last year, a group of guest divers, accompanied by Eletr, rescued a Giant Oceanic Manta Ray from ghost nets. The Manta Trust later identified the ray and added it to their database, naming it ‘Kandooma’ in honor of the team and the location where it was found.

"We were thrilled when The Manta Trust named the rescued Manta Ray ‘Kandooma’," said Eletr. "These creatures symbolize the beauty and mystery of the ocean, and it’s our duty to ensure their survival for future generations."

Throughout Kandooma Manta Month, guests can participate in guided scuba dives and snorkeling excursions to observe these giants in their natural habitat. The activities also include Marine Biology talks with guest and in-house expert speakers, offering insights into manta ray behavior and the threats they face.

In addition to these activities, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has introduced a new jewelry line centered on the manta ray. A portion of the proceeds from each pendant sold will be donated to The Manta Trust, further supporting conservation efforts.

For younger guests, the resort has launched a Kids’ Marine Explorers Program, offering an educational and fun experience where children can learn about manta rays, engage in hands-on activities, and become certified “Kandoo Ambassadors.”

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma is located in the South Male Atoll, just 40 minutes from the airport by boat. The resort is surrounded by white sandy beaches, swaying coconut palms, and turquoise waters, offering a picturesque setting for various leisure pursuits, including some of the best diving spots in the Maldives. Guests can choose from a variety of accommodations, including Garden and Beach Villas, two-story Beach Houses, and the popular Overwater Villas.

Families are well-catered for with a range of 2- and 3-bedroom villas, the Kandoo Kids’ Club, and a comprehensive activities program. The resort features six food and beverage outlets, ensuring that guests can explore the flavors of the Maldives and satisfy their appetites. For those seeking relaxation, sun loungers and hammocks are available throughout the island, while the tranquil Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala offers a serene escape for both body and mind.

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives aligns its conservation efforts with IHG’s purpose of True Hospitality for Good, through their sustainability program ‘Journey to Tomorrow,’ which is part of the hotel group’s commitment to helping achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
