Initiatives taken to restart tourism with Indians

On July 29, 2020, The High Commission of the Republic of Maldives conducted the first webinar targeting Indian travel market. The webinar was a collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Maldives in Thiruvananthapuram, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation and Health Protection Agency of Maldives.

This webinar aimed to raise awareness about the measures taken at all contact points for tourists who visit the country following the border reopening on July 15, 2020. Remarks and presentations were made by MMPRC, MACL, MOT and HPA which focused on the various safety and precautionary measures taken against the current pandemic at the airport, at tourist establishments, and the health sector preparations. Panelists also attended to concerns and questions from the participants.

The webinar was a huge success with over 181 outbound Indian tour operators taking part in it. The interest shown by the participants indicated the interests that exists among Indian tourists towards the Maldives, and keenness of Indian travelers to visit the Maldives once borders reopen in India.

India has constantly shown substantial increase in tourist arrivals with over 115,000 tourist visiting the Maldives by September last year alone. This was a 114% growth from 56,000 tourists in the same period of 2018. The Indian market has been one of the fastest-growing markets to the Maldives.
