Ministry of Tourism, working with Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defense Force has announced the introduction of beach scouts as part of the Water Safety Program in habited islands.
The purpose is to make Maldives a safer place for tourists and citizens, with no risk involved in beach and water activities such as swimming.
In 19 inhabited islands with at least 100 tourist beds, beach scouts have been established as life guards. Application for beach scouts have been opened.
The islands are: B. Dharavandhoo, AA. Rasdhoo, AA. Thoddoo, AA. Ukulhas, ADh. Dhigurah, ADh. Haggnaameedhoo, K. Dhiffushi, K. Gulhi, K. Guraidhoo, K. Himmafushi, K. Huraa, K. Hulhumale, K.Maafushi, Male City, K.Thulusdhoo, K.Villingili, V.Thinadhoo, L.Gan and Addu City.
The key duties of beach scouts are providing safety briefing, details of the island and weather and ensuring safety in the water. Candidates should have the capability to provide first assistance to any rescue or help needed. They should also be familiar with first aid and the locations where swimming is safe.
