The seascape of Baa Atoll must be one of the most sought-after in Maldives. The unique formation of islands, the rich biodiversity both above and below the waves, and the community in Baa Atoll all come together to form the UNESCO Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve.
Celebrating 10 years since the Reserve was officially established, this year is a grand year for the community at Baa Atoll. Housed within the pristine atoll, Vakkaru Maldives too is pledging to protect the oceans and the planet by contributing to the celebrations at the Reserve.
The team at Vakkaru joined by guests holidaying on the island all headed out to Olhugiri Island, a protected gem in the Reserve, to conduct a day-long beach clean-up event. The community event saw everyone coming together to pick up single-use plastics and other trash that had washed up on the island beaches, and removing them mindfully from the site.
Olhugiri Island and its housereef was deemed as protected areas on June 4, 2004. It is an environmentally important island given that here, regular roosting of Frigate Birds can be witnessed. This is one of only two such sites in the Maldives.
Vakkaru Maldives has sustainability and mindfulness embedded in its ethos. Activities on the resort ensure that both the team and guests contribute wholeheartedly to the wellbeing of themselves, and the environment – a hollistic approach indeed!
