In a virtual ceremony held yesterday, Ministry of Tourism met with the National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) and the Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM). The discussion was mainly focused on highlighting the issues on the lack of trained locals in the Maldives for both the boating and guesthouse sector of the industry.
NBAM raised major concerns based on a survey conducted with 23 participating boats in 2020. According to the survey, all boat operators face challenges in acquiring local talent for the boats despite the various opportunities available. NBAM also shared details of initiatives taken up amid the pandemic to overcome the challenges including training courses conducted at the Maldives National University.
GAM too contributed similar issues. The association emphasized on the dire need to regulate proper training and short courses for the locals in the sector and awarding them with valid certification upon completion of such activities.
All participants of the meeting agreed upon the importance of the matters addressed. Tourism Ministry assured their full support in the matter. The meeting was concluded with further follow-up meetings in the pipeline.
