A border security system has been established at Maafaru International Airport in N. Maafaru. Communications, Science and Technology Ministry announced yesterday that all of the credit goes to the National center for Information Technology (NCIT) employees as they completed the installation of the border system on August 19th.
According to Island Aviation Services, Maafaru International Airport welcomed 9 private jets carrying a total of 89 tourists within a month of the border reopening (15th July to 11th August).
Now, with the effective installation of the system at Maafaru International Airport, all international airports and seaports of Maldives now have border control systems and will facilitate easier travel for tourists through the airport. The ministry says that this will be a huge convenience given the current situation of the country. The ministry has also assured that NCIT will provide all additional support needed in the implementation of the system.
The airport prepared for the reopening of the border with installation of thermal cameras, glass partitions at service counters and social distancing markers on July 15 by establishing an in-house PCR lab, funded by international resort chain Soneva Group, which operates Soneva Jani, a luxury tourist resort near Maafaru.
Besides this, Noonu atoll is surrounded by a number of other hot tourist resorts such as Noku Maldives, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and Velaa Private Island, all of which are luxury tourist resorts.
Maafaru International Airport was developed with USD 60 million in funding from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), and is designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircrafts. Its runway is yet to be further enlarged to accommodate Boing 777 twinjet aircrafts with the funding of UAE.
