To mark the 50th year of Tourism in the Maldives, the Ministry of Tourism has launched a very special photography event on the occasion. Themed as the ‘Maldives 50 Best Sites’, the event hopes to capture the underwater life of 50 dive sites in the country. Held in collaboration with Ocean Geographics and Maldives Alliance of Dive Operators, the competition is set to commence on September 28th, 2022.
As part of this anniversary event, a designated website for the photography competition was launched on 5th September 2022. To find out more information about the event, the terms and conditions and even register to be part of this phenomenal experience, please head to the website at https://maldives50.site/.
The one-day event is set to start on morning 7:30am and will extend till evening 17:30pm. During this time, interested divers and other parties can snap pictures at these pre-selected signature dive sites and send their photographs to the website. Competitors must submit a portfolio of five pictures for each site including a wide angle of a reef scene, 1 close-up of a living coral, 1 picture of a fish species, and 2 others of their preference.
According to the ministry, the purpose of such an event is to understand the health of the underwater wealth of Maldives and by doing so implement sustainable, protective measures. Of course, the event serves another aim of amplifying the celebratory events of the Golden Jubilee as well.
From this year onwards, the photography competition is going to be held annually in the Maldives. Through this yearly event, the ministry wishes to track the health of the local reefs and pave way for other conservation and sustainability projects in the future.
All participants of the event will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement for contributing to the Coral Reefs Health Assessment of the Maldives. At each dive site, 1st, 2nd and 3 distinguished mentions will be selected from among the pictures and awarded prizes. With international judges presiding over the selection process, winners will be announced live on 5th October 2022.
