On, Sunday The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) hosted its 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Kurumba Maldives. With 95 members participating in this year, the AGM was inaugurated by the Chairman of MATI, Mr. Mohamed Umar Maniku. The official opening remarks were delivered by the Vice Chairman of MATI, Mr. Hussain Afeef followed by a statement from the Secretary General of MATI, Mr. Ahmed Nazeer.
Some of the notable attendees at this year’s AGM include the Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, Minister of Health, Honourable Ahmed Naseem, and the CEO & MD of Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed. Senior representatives from the National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM), Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and National Hotels and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NNHGAM) also took part in the meeting.
The Chairman of MATI, Mr. Mohamed Umar Maniku presided over the official proceedings of the AGM. Some of the proceedings featured in the AGM include the Passing of Minutes of the 32nd AGM and adoption of minutes, a video presentation highlighting the work done by MATI in the previous year, the presentation of the Annual and Financial Reports for 2022, the adoption of the budget for 2023, and appointment of Auditors for this year. Moreover, an amendment to the Charter of MATI which included extending the term of Executive Board Members from 1 to 3 years was passed and the Executive Board for the 2023-2026 cycle was elected.
In celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Tourism last year, MATI launched 2 coffee table books: ‘Maldivian Resort Architecture – 50 years of island resorts’ and ‘50 years of Tourism in Maldives – The Pioneers, People and Policies that shaped Maldives Tourism’. The former was authored by Mr. Mauroof Jameel and explored the architectural evolution of the Maldivian resorts whereas the latter was authored by Dr. Simad Saeed who documented the evolution of the Maldives Tourism Industry in the past 5 decades.
The books were officially launched by the Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom and Chairman of MATI together with the authors and other honourable dignitaries of the industry. Mr. Mauroof Jameel is an architect, researcher and illustrator who specializes in the architectural heritage of the Maldives. One of his most noteworthy works includes the book ‘Coral Stone Mosques of Maldives: The Vanishing Legacy of the Indian Ocean’. Likewise, Dr. Simad Saeed is a researcher of Tourism in Maldives and the Managing Director of CDE Consulting. His work specializes in exploring Strategy, Sustainability and Social Innovation.
