Maldives Discovers A New Species of Seagrass

Maldives Resilient Reefs Project has announced an exciting discovery of a type of seagrass in the Maldives that has never been found before. The discovery of Cymodocea Serrulata brings the number of seagrass species recorded from the Maldives to seven.

The announcement on the organization’s Facebook page revealed that there is a high probability that there will be more species in the Maldives. It was made by the organization’s members as they were going through albums searching for seagrass photos for a webinar on 19th May, as they spotted the image from Addu Nature Park.

A year ago, the Protect Maldives Seagrass, a dedicated campaign to protect the seagrass in Maldives was launched. The project is led by UK-based environmental charity Blue Marine Foundation and Six Senses Laamu’s Maldives Underwater Initiative team and has convinced more than 30 high-end resorts to protect their seagrass meadows.
