According to the latest statistical data, the arrival numbers to the Maldives will see their 1 millionth tourist tomorrow and Maldives is prepping up to welcome the visitor to our humble shores. Maldives is able to accomplish this ground-breaking milestone even with hurdles caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the geopolitical conflicts that have affected the tourism industry of the country.
While speaking about this timely achievement, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MMPRC, Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed commented that it is a delightful opportune to welcome 1 million tourists to the Maldives despite the many challenges faced by the industry. He further added that such a feat was only accomplished by joint efforts from many government authorities, policymakers, tourism sector employees and stakeholders who are continuously dedicated to make this a reality. He also emphasized that with this milestone, it is the critical window to strengthen the efforts and determination to defend the title of Maldives as the World’s Leading Destination. In his concluding remarks he stated that MMPRC is committed to continuing their efforts of marketing the Sunny Side of Life globally.
In early 2022, the President of the Maldives, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed in his national address that Maldives aims to welcome 1.6 million tourist visitors by the end of 2022. As of 31st July, Maldives has already welcomed more than 900000 visitors with India and the UK dominating the charts along with Russia, Germany and Italy. The remaining top 10 markets include United States, France, Switzerland and Spain.
India has dominated the charts among the top 3 markets since the beginning of the pandemic. The pre-pandemic top market China saw plummeting arrivals due to the ongoing pandemic as international borders were closed and remains closed to this day.
MMPRC have been carrying out many efforts to market and preserve destination presence of the Maldives in all key markets. They have conducted 16 campaigns in India during the year and took part in leading fairs in the region including OTM, SATTE, Travel and Tourism Fair and MILT Congress. In addition to that roadshows, webinars and joint campaigns with popular publications and tourist companies have been executed which played a crucial part in positioning India as the top market in the Maldives.
To advertise the Maldives in the UK, MMPRC has run 7 high-profile campaigns with well-established institutions such as News UK and British Airways. Moreover, joint campaigns were carried out with high-ranking tourism firms like Kuoni, Destination 2 and Blue Bay Travel promoting the destination on multiple fronts.
In Russia, Maldives has always been marked as a well-loved destination and to preserve that perspective 10 campaigns have been carried out in the area by MMPRC. From taking part in fairs such as Moscow Dive Show and LTM Moscow to social media campaigns and workshops, MMPRC has covered all ground in the Russian market.
MMPRC is continuously planning and executing advertising campaigns in prominent markets of the Maldives and their commitment to the effort has led to the Maldives winning the “World’s Leading Destination” in the World Travel Awards 2021. This is the second consecutive time Maldives have won the title and goes to show the excellence in the Tourism Industry along with charm of the Maldivian Hospitality.
