The Maldives has been officially recognised as the world’s top romantic destination in the debut edition of the Expedia 2025 Island Hot List. The list, released by the global travel platform, features ten of the most in-demand island destinations worldwide, with the Maldives taking the lead in the romance category.
According to Expedia, travel interest in the Maldives has grown by 15% compared to the previous year. This strong increase places the country among a select group of global islands experiencing high traveller demand.
While the Maldives continues to be known for its romantic appeal and luxury offerings, the report also reflects a shift in how the destination is being perceived. Expedia’s “Insider Tip” describes this evolution as “Paradise with a purpose,” highlighting a growing emphasis on sustainability. The report points to trends such as floating villas powered by solar energy, coral restoration initiatives, and efforts toward carbon-neutral tourism.
This recognition aligns with ongoing efforts by resorts and tourism operators in the Maldives to adopt more environmentally responsible practices while maintaining high-end experiences.
The Expedia Hot List considers traveller data, hotel quality, ease of access, and overall appeal. Alongside the Maldives, the report names Bali as best for relaxation, Fiji for community, and Koh Samui for affordable luxury. Within the Maldives, Jumeirah Olhahali Island is listed as a recommended property.
The report notes that May is the best time to travel to the Maldives, offering useful planning insights for both visitors and hospitality providers. It also highlights the destination’s premium status, with average hotel rates around $655 per night.
The rising interest in island destinations globally—up by 30%—suggests a strong year ahead for Maldivian tourism. With its combination of romance, luxury, and environmental focus, the Maldives stands out as a leading destination for 2025.
