Maldives Sees Increase in Demand for Fish Export

On 8th May, Maldives Seafood Processors and Exporters Association (MSPEA) revealed that the demand for Maldivian fish exports, which had plunged due to the restrictions imposed to control the spread of COVID-19, had begun increasing as European countries began recovering and easing restrictions and reopening markets.

In the statement, it was also informed that the price for frozen yellowfin tuna, which had dropped to MVR 25, had now risen to MVR 60 in the European market. MSPEA said that during the month of Ramadan, supply of fish is lower than the demand in European markets. This, as the association stated, is a golden opportunity for fishermen to claim their role in the economy.

The Maldives Seafood Processors and Exporters Association (MSPEA) represents a number of the major the Maldivian tuna processing companies, including MIFCO and others, and is the certificate holder for the Maldives pole-and-line skipjack tuna fishery Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification.
