The Executive Salary Challenge in Maldives

Social media sees various challenges and hashtags, but one that has travelled far in the island nation of Maldives is the Executive Salary Challenge. Executives reduce their salary by a particular percentage and then challenge another executive to do so. In the pandemic, as businesses attempt to lower costs as much as possible, it leads to lower staff salaries and executives cutting their salaries would reduce the income gap.

Ali Ihusaan, who was the first person to start the challenge in the country tweeted: I have agreed to cut my salary by 43% so some of my junior staff doesn’t have to. Now I challenge all Cabinet Ministers, Political Appointees, MPs and MDs of SOE’s to do the same. I especially invite Colonel Nazim to accept the challenge.

Following this, Colonel Nazim, Member of Parliament and Former Minister of Defense, stated that he cuts his salary by 50% and challenged Republic Engineers Maldives’ Managing Director Abdullah Salih who also cut his salary by half. Further, The Chairman of Centurion PLC had also taken part.
