Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal has declared the Maldives a global role model for sustainable tourism. Speaking at the 'Maldives Media Meet' organized by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) during the ATM 2024 at the World Trade Center in Dubai, Minister Faisal emphasized the nation’s pioneering tourism model, established 50 years ago.
"The world today looks at the unique brand of tourism that the Maldives has developed over the years as a prime example," Minister Faisal said. He stressed that the government is collaborating closely with the private sector to maintain the highest standards of tourism quality. The minister highlighted the Maldives’ accolades in four categories, including the leading destination of the Indian Ocean, as proof of this success.
Minister Faisal acknowledged the dynamic nature of the tourism industry, noting that the Maldives has adeptly navigated these changes, especially post-COVID-19. "The status of Maldives tourism has improved significantly since the pandemic," he remarked.
He revealed that the Maldives anticipates a 6.5% increase in tourist arrivals this year, a significant step towards the goal of attracting 2 million tourists annually and boosting tourism revenue to USD 6 billion. The minister credited this growth to the dedication of industry leaders, hardworking employees, and loyal tourists.
Minister Faisal outlined ambitious plans for further expanding tourism in the Maldives. He emphasized the government's efforts to enhance the transportation system to facilitate tourist access and improve the airport experience. He expressed high expectations for the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, set to open in the last quarter of this year. This new terminal is expected to increase the airport's capacity to seven million passengers annually.
Furthermore, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently inaugurated a mega project to develop the main airport, with plans to build 15 more domestic airports over the next five years. These initiatives aim to make travel within the Maldives more convenient and accessible.
In conclusion, Minister Faisal expressed optimism about the future of tourism in the Maldives. "The future of tourism in our country is very bright. However, this can only be confirmed by finding innovative ways and working together," he stated.
The Maldives continues to set a high standard for sustainable tourism, showcasing its ability to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing industry. As it embarks on ambitious projects and initiatives, the Maldives remains committed to offering exceptional experiences while prioritizing environmental and economic sustainability.
