Maldives Urges Commonwealth to Open Up Borders

“We cannot keep our borders closed for long, we are engaging with the relevant industry stakeholders in compiling ‘Guideline for Restarting Maldives Tourism’ from July,” announced Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed, who participated in Commonwealth’s Virtual Seminar on the Impact of Tourism, Debt and Disaster Risk Management.

The pandemic has had a huge economic impact on the island nation. The Minister notes that this is the first time in 47 years of tourism in the Maldives that the country has experienced zero tourist arrival since this March, which is more devastating than the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and 2008 Global Financial Crisis. It is estimated that the economic growth may recede to a negative 26% in worst case scenario.

The actions taken by the government of Maldives to flatten the curve includes utilizing 26 tourist establishments, nearly 3000 rooms, for quarantine and isolation purposes. The Minister says that this is a good chance for the government to go forward with green and inclusive policies for recovery. It’s a good chance to integrate policies on climate change.

“We are glad that we are back in the Commonwealth. We thank the support given to us by the organization and its member states during previous tough times. We urge Commonwealth countries to open up borders without compromising safety. It’s time to build travelers confidence, towards an intra-commonwealth travel and tourism,” stated Minister Ali Waheed.
