On 17th December, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed announced that 13 new resorts will be opening in 2020. At the ceremony held to resume tourism lease, the Minister stated that number of resorts has now increased to 154 from 143 in former President Yameen Adbul Gayoom’s presidency.
The latest official figures show that 152 resorts, 10 hotels, 579 guesthouses and 154 live-aboard vessels are in operation. These establishments have a capacity of 49,337 tourist beds. Government had earlier said that a total of 132 tourism projects involving 140 islands are being carried out across the Maldives.
Increase in resort openings brings in a lot of development to the tourism industry, contributing to achieve the 2 million visitor arrivals target set by the government for 2020. However, as these luxury resorts grow in Maldives, the demand for budget tourism needs to be met as well. In fact, the guesthouse sector rapidly expanded with over 500 guesthouses in operation today.
