The Managing Director of Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC), Mr. Mohamed Raaidh delivered a keynote lecture on the Tourism of the Maldives at its environmental sensitivity. Titled ‘Maldives: A story of transformation into an international destination and the global warming threat’, he delivered the lecture to students of the Faculty of Tourism of Mardin Artuklu University in Turkey.
A total of 100 students participated in this guest lecture held on 3rd November 2022. During the lecture, Raaidh recalled the initial stages of tourism in the Maldives and how it began with the tireless efforts of a group of ambitious youth. He shared with the audience how the tourism industry had shaped itself in the past five decades and highlighted the joint works of both the public and private sectors to promote sustainable tourism in the Maldives.
In addition to this, Raaidh shed light on the importance of organized and systemic work that is the secret behind Maldives’ success story as a beloved destination at the forefront of global tourism. In this regard, he acknowledged the love and compassion people have for the tourism industry. Speaking on environmental vulnerability, he brought to the students’ attention the numerous and vigorous policies implemented by the Government to protect the environment and conserve natural resources. He emphasized this by pointing out that Maldives is one of the lowest-lying countries with an altitude of one foot above sea level.
Mardin is a prominent city of the Islamic civilization of Mesopotamia and reflecting on this, Raaidh stated that Maldives is also a 100% Islamic country. Furthermore, he elaborated to the auditorium that the commendable sacrifice of every Maldivian has led to the country’s contemporary position in the worldwide tourism industry. After he concluded the lecture, a designated Question & Answer session was held to clarify any of the queries the attendees might have.
The lecture was attended by Mardin Artuklu University’s Dean Professor, Dr. Serhat Harman and many other members from the faculty and student body.
