Mark Eletr Celebrates 3 Years of Innovation at Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives

Wednesday 18th of December 2024

Mark Eletr, General Manager of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, is marking his third anniversary at the resort with a string of impressive milestones that showcase his dynamic leadership and forward-thinking vision. Hailing from Australia, Mark joined the resort in November 2021, bringing with him a wealth of experience from luxury resorts across the globe.

Reflecting on his time in the Maldives, Mark admits, "It’s been a rollercoaster ride. We've accomplished so much, and the team has embraced even my craziest ideas, which I love." From refurbishments to new openings, his expertise in managing large-scale projects has been instrumental in moving Kandooma forward as it continues to evolve in its 40-year journey.

One of the most exciting developments under Mark’s leadership has been the creation of Surf Corner—an area that has transformed into a vibrant space for guests, particularly during the surfing season. The space now features a fire pit, which has become a hit with visiting music stars, many of whom enjoy impromptu jam sessions. Over the years, the resort has welcomed some of the biggest names in music, including Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Xavier Rudd, and Delta Goodrem, adding a unique cultural touch to the resort's appeal.

As 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Music in Paradise, a collaboration that has brought major music performances to the resort, Mark is already looking forward to what 2025 has in store. Guests can expect performances from stars like Missy Higgins, The Church, and Anthony Callea, ensuring that Kandooma remains a hotspot for both relaxation and entertainment.

Mark has also overseen several major infrastructure projects, such as the recent addition of new staff accommodation. This new block, which will house 44 units, is part of his broader commitment to sustainability and supporting the resort’s operations. He’s particularly proud of plans to install solar power on the accommodation roofs, adding to the resort's existing renewable energy efforts.

Sustainability is a core focus for Mark, who has introduced several eco-friendly initiatives at Kandooma. One of his most innovative ideas is the creation of Frond Circles, where fallen palm fronds are arranged into circles to decompose naturally, turning into rich compost for the resort’s gardens. This initiative has significantly reduced the resort’s reliance on diesel-powered vessels to transport garden waste, making it a major environmental win. Mark believes that "nature doesn’t have waste," and the Frond Circles exemplify his philosophy of circular economies.

Another key sustainability project is the resort’s Dive Free promotion, which offers certified divers staying three nights or more the chance to enjoy free daily dives. As a passionate diver himself, Mark is dedicated to promoting responsible tourism and showcasing the vibrant marine life just off the resort’s shores. He’s also deeply involved in the conservation of marine life, having participated in a daring rescue of a giant oceanic manta ray caught in ghost nets—a life-changing experience that spurred him to further support marine conservation.

In addition to diving, Mark’s commitment to the environment extends to Reefscaping initiatives, where 100 coral frames were added to the waters surrounding the resort in an effort to regenerate coral reefs. His work on sustainability is guided by IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow programme, and he is keen to collaborate with other organizations to drive meaningful change.

Mark’s bold leadership has led to increased solar power usage at the resort, with the addition of marine-grade photovoltaic panels on the roofs of 19 overwater villas. This project doubled the resort’s renewable energy capacity, bringing the total to 518.52 KWp. Though not all of Mark’s ideas have panned out—such as the abandoned wave energy project—he views setbacks as valuable learning experiences and is always eager to push forward with new innovations.

One area where Mark is particularly excited is the resort’s Chef’s Garden, which now grows bananas, coconuts, and a variety of herbs. He’s also experimenting with farming Tilapia in a pilot project on his personal property, with plans to expand the resort’s farm-to-table offerings in the future.

Perhaps the most exciting development for guests has been the unveiling of the 3-bedroom Beach Pool Villa, designed to cater to families and larger groups seeking more luxurious, private accommodation. While Mark is not planning to add more private pools in the immediate future, the new villa has provided valuable insights into enhancing the resort’s offerings.

Throughout his three years at Kandooma, Mark has prioritized the development of local talent, a passion that continues to shape the resort’s future. He’s particularly proud of the success of Shahid Hussain, the resort’s former Manager, who was recently promoted to General Manager of Noku Maldives. Mark finds great joy in nurturing Maldivian talent and has made it a goal to ensure that at least 40% of Kandooma’s roles are filled by local employees.

Looking back on his tenure, Mark feels a deep sense of accomplishment, not just in the projects he’s completed but in the people he’s mentored and the team he’s built. "It’s very special when you have the opportunity to positively influence the career of others," he says, reflecting on the progress made at the resort.

In the years to come, Mark is committed to continuing the momentum of change at Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives. Whether it’s expanding the resort’s sustainable practices, enhancing guest experiences, or fostering local talent, his passion for progress is clear. "If you don’t try, there’s no risk or reward," he says. "Try and fail, well, at least you know and go back to the drawing board. Try and win, then celebrate and look for the next opportunity."

Under Mark’s leadership, Kandooma Maldives has become not just a destination for luxury, but a hub for innovation, sustainability, and community engagement. The next chapter in the resort’s 40-year story is already being written, and with Mark at the helm, there’s no telling how high the resort will soar in the years to come.
