In May, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo launched an innovative Maldivian Day program, aimed at bringing forward the diverse traditions and skilled artisanship of the Maldivian cultural heritage. The time-honoured and deeply ingrained cultural tapestry of Maldives pays tribute to South Asian, Arabic and African influences with a well-established reputation to preserve its cultural norms for future generations to come.
The monthly Maldivian Day program that takes centre stage at the resort will provide a platform for local artisans to showcase their traditional talents and enable guests to see the authentic and original pieces created by skillful artists. One of the experiences featured during the program is ‘Thundu Kunaa’ where mats and baskets are intricately woven with coconut palm leaves through honed practices passed down from generations. The end products are visually pleasing and serve practical purposes in everyday life.
Another event on display is the ‘Dhivehi Libaas’ – the traditional Maldivian dress renowned for its vibrant and sleek attire, meticulous needlework of dazzling colours and hand-sewn stripes. An original Dhivehi Libaas take a minimum of 15 days to finish, and the experience will help guests get hands on background to the masterful art and help sustain this cultural tradition in Maldivian society.
The height of Maldivian artisanship is seen through lacquer work, "Liyelaajehun," which involves the delicate skill of coating wood or coral with a glossy lacquer finish. This ancient technique produces charming decorative pieces, jewellery, vases, and ornaments, all adorned with vibrant motifs inspired by marine life and the island’s scenic surroundings.
Maldivians are also skilled boat builders and guests can experience making Maldivian traditional "Dhoni" boats with local boat builders, who are masters of constructing the iconic wooden vessels that have long been integral to the Maldivian way of life. These dhonis, acclaimed for their elegant curves and complex carvings, evoke a sense of history and a connection to the sea that has anchored the Maldivian people for centuries.
This awe-inspiring program was launched in collaboration with the local community of GA. Vilingili will be available for guests throughout the year. By enabling unique opportunities for guests to learn about traditional crafts and immerse themselves in local handiwork, Mercure Maldives Koodoo is reaffirming its position as a property that crafts everlasting experiences, deeply rooted in tradition.
