Ministry Of Tourism Kick Starts Underwater Photo Competition

As part of the festivities planned to commemorate the Golden Jubilee year of Tourism in the Maldives, Ministry of Tourism has kick-started an underwater photo competition. The competition is held in close collaboration with Ocean Geographic and Maldives Alliance for Dive Operators (MADO).

A virtual ceremony was held to inaugurate the competition with the Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdullah Mausoom attending the event. The registration for the competition was opened at the ceremony by the acclaimed Maldivian Diver, Hussain Rasheedh (Sandy).

While speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdullah Mausoom remarked that Maldives is renowned for its dive sites and highlighted the importance of conserving the coral reefs. He further stated that the photo competition will be held annually from this year onwards, and can provide valued data in studying the rapid changes undergone by the reefs. In this regard, he added that the competition can pave way for sustainable tourism in the Maldives.

During the ceremony, Founder of Ocean Geographic, Michael AW commented that such events are vital for the conservation of coral reefs and expressed his heartfelt gratitude for being able to partake in the efforts to preserve the Maldivian reefs.

As part of the competition, the Ministry of Tourism will be receiving photos captured at different dive spots in the Maldives with each individual being able to submit up to five photos per registration. By analyzing the photos, the Ministry will be announcing the 50 best dive sites in the Maldives that truly encompasses the beauty of the coral reefs. A designated panel of judges will assess the photos and winners will be published on October 5th 2022.
