Due to the pandemic, one of the biggest sectors to be affected in Maldives was the backbone of the country, the tourism sector. During these last two years, we as a country have seen the lowest point the tourism sector has hit since opening the doors for tourism in 1972.
Ever since COVID was announced, the government has been working tirelessly to get 90% of the eligible population vaccinated in order get back the growing economy to normal. Because the borders of Maldives had to close and re-open due to the unpredicted waves of COVID being hit, the forecast of tourist arrivals were changed a couple of times by the Ministry of Tourism.
Previously forecasted to 1.5 million tourist arrivals by the end of this year, it has now been revised to 1.3 million tourist arrivals. Compared to last year, by the end of July Maldives was visited by over 600,000 visitors this year. Last year there was a total of 555,494 tourists.
