Strategy consulting firm Tendon Consulting and Services Pvt Ltd and Australian public company Wave Swell Energy will be developing a wave energy project in Maldives.
During the press at Maagiri Hotel, the CEO of WSE Dr.Tom Denniss, whose purpose of visit is to present their planning and conduct a feasibility study in Maldives, describes the new technology. “Wave Swell Energy developed a new technology that converts energy of motion waves into electricity.” While there are variety of forms of this technology, the one that would be used in Maldives is an oscillating water column: an artificial blowhole. It consists of a large wave capture chamber, a platform for an air turbine, a lip, wing walls, and an air chamber. For the very first time, the oscillating water column will be unidirectional instead of bidirectional, which makes it cheaper and more efficient.
When asked about the module of the unit, Mr.Dennis explains that it depends on the feasibility study on construction capabilities in Maldives. However, it is likely be closer than 100 meters to shore, which is more cost-effective as it will be constructed from shore.
Electricity in Maldives is heavily subsidized. The main purpose of the project is to reduce the subsidy by government and benefit citizens in the long-run. Spokesperson for Tendon further stated that the whole population will be benefited from the decrease in oil expenditure.
After a 6-months study, a unit will be delivered within 18 months maximum. The location has not yet been finalized, but so far is estimated to be in Male or in South of Maldives considering the usage of electricity in the area and wave climate.
