Over 11,000 Resort Employees on Unpaid Leave

Tourism Employers Association of Maldives has revealed that over 11,000 resort employees are being sent home on no-pay leaves due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This comes from the drastic fall in demand in the tourism industry, as a result of precautionary measures.

The association, working to protect and preserve the rights of employees, published a list of all the resorts where the no-pay leave was executed, on social media. In addition to this, the published list also includes tourist properties that sliced employee salaries.

Labor Relations Authority attested they were receiving complaints of illegal conduct by many employers against their employees – including the complete omission of salaries and allowances, no-pay leaves along with redundancies.

The association said that it is regrettable that such a large number of tourism employees have been placed on unpaid leaves, and said it is unacceptable that so many employees are left with no means of income.
