Yesterday on International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, UNFPA Maldives tweeted the dreadful news of more than 50 rape cases reported in Maldives from 2017-2019.
1 story about rape is 1 story too many.

Rape is a severe human rights violation. We #StandAgainstRape! ZERO is the only number we accept: https://t.co/KwRpSDE8rX#GenerationEquality#16Days #orangetheworld pic.twitter.com/1iOZ96g4fk
So far in 2019, there have been 368 sexual offences. Recently, the impregnation of a 13 year old, subjected to 3 marriages brought this grave issue into highlights once again. There was a slightly similar case in 2012: 15 year old girl was raped for several years by her stepfather, impregnated and her infant was murdered.
In 2010, a wife was raped in front of her husband in Fuvamulah. Let’s not forget about the gang rape of the 20 year old in 2013 and 19 year old in 2017. Rape and sexual offences have become a serious crime in Maldives. Together, we must stop rape now!
