Yesterday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Shahid signed Statute of the OIC Women’s Development Organization in a meeting with the Secretary-General of Organization of Islamic Cooperation Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen.
OIC is second largest inter-governmental organization with 57 state members aiming to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony among various people of the world. OIC established Women’s Development Organization to promote the role and empowerment of women within Member States. Maldives has been a member of OIC for 43 years.
During the meeting, Minister Shahid and Secretary-General Al-Othaimeen discussed ways in which Maldives can further contribute to the deliberations within the OIC. The secretary-general welcomed the decision by the Government of Maldives to open a consulate in Jeddah.
Hopefully, this would be a valuable movement towards women’s protection in Maldives.
