As a resort that values environmental conservation and animal welfare as core pillars of its corporate social responsibility policy, Reethi Beach Resort has actively contributed to the rescue of an Olive Ridley turtle – Niyami. The adult male turtle was entangled in a ghost net and was rescued on 15th June 2023 in Dhaalu Atoll, with the collaborative efforts of the Olive Ridley Project and its Marine Turtle Rescue Centre.
Niyami’s transit to the Rescue Centre proved to be a daunting challenge and required precise coordination and support from various partners. Manta Air generously transported him via two seaplanes and Reethi Beach Resort offered a speedboat ride for Niyami’s safe arrival during the last leg of the tiresome journey to the Rescue Centre. Upon admission to the facility, Niyami was found to be underweight with several injuries caused by the entanglement.
He suffered multiple ligature injuries on his front flippers and left hind flipper, including an exposed fracture. Moreover, profound abrasions were identified on his carapace and plastron because of rubbing against the shell for a prolonged period. After assessing Niyami’s condition, the veterinary team began his supportive therapy and pain relief work as well as initiated the process of stabilizing the turtle.
Once stabilized, Niyami can undergo the necessary surgery to clean and debride his wounds. He has already completed his first surgery and recuperated uneventfully. The rescue progress is promising too with Niyami demonstrating active swimming behaviour in his tank and even attempting to stay submerged. He has also started to eat, and the Rescue Centre team is closely monitoring his health, ensuring that he receives all the care and attention required during this crucial time.
By being involved in the prompt rescue of Niyami, Reethi Beach Resort reaffirms its commitment to conserving marine life and promoting sustainable practices. This collaboration with the Olive Ridley Project also underscores the collective commitment and determination of the resort to protect endangered species and their natural habitats. Reethi Beach remains dedicated to supporting Niyami throughout his rehabilitation and eventual release back into the wild.
