This month, Reethi Beach Resort and its partners including SC Capital Partners, Ocean Fanatics and Maldives Whale Shark Research Program (MWSRP) kick-started their conservation efforts by paying an educational visit to local school at B. Dharavandhoo. The trip aimed to create awareness about the marine biodiversity and conservation as well as provide an insight to the job opportunities in marine science field.
Many notable attendees participated in the event including the General Manager of Reethi Beach Resort, Denise Schmidt and Executive Director & Head of Sustainability at SC Capital Partners Pte Ltd, Hwang Yue. Several members of management and staff of the resort and Ocean Fanatics also took part in the event.
An awareness session was carried out at the school with many secondary school children, faculty members and the principal of Baa Atoll School partaking in the session. Chloe Winn and Naomi from MWSRP led the informative session with a focus given to the spotty giants of the sea, the whale sharks.
The team emphasized on the need for protecting the species and shared with the children the pivotal role played by the creatures in maintaining the ecosystem. The program also educated young Maldivians on environmental values and the importance of conservation.
The whale sharks have been protected in the Maldives since 1995 and through such awareness programs, Reethi Beach Resort and its partners hopes to instill in young leaders a dedication to conserve the marine ecosystem. The program was concluded with an interactive Q&A session where inquisitive minds asked interesting questions about the whale sharks and the marine ecosystem.
A book donation event was held during the trip too with Reethi Beach Resort handing over books to the Baa Atoll School library. The donation brought into the light the integral role played by resorts in uplifting local communities through beneficial impacts. This event marked the first of a series of many events planned for the 1-month collaboration with MWSRP.
