Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa has teamed up with Reefscapers, an independent marine consultancy in Maldives, to develop a tailored marine biology program where coral frames are placed around the resort’s house reef to save the surrounding coral reefs.
The resort’s house reef was greatly affected by the 2016 El Nino, a warming of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean that resulted in unusually warm waters and caused coral bleaching. The coral frames are visited on a regular basis to identify which species are better suited to particular environments and which can adapt to warmer temperatures.
The frames are designed and made on the local island of Fulhadhoo in Baa atoll, providing valuable local employment opportunities and allowing locals to develop skills outside of traditional fishing by getting involved in marine conservation and tourism activities.
Guests interested in the project can directly build their own coral frame with the resort’s marine biologist, trained by Reefscapers program experts. Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa is known for its endless water recreations. Here, you enjoy diving, snorkelling, boating, sailing, jet skiing and more in an unforgettable way.
