Velana International Airport witnessed a momentous occasion as Sichuan Airlines, one of China's leading carriers, officially resumed flights to the Maldives on August 2, 2023. With the graceful landing of the resumption flight, carrying 186 eager passengers, at 6:05 PM yesterday evening, the Maldives warmly welcomed the symbolic revival of tourism connections with a special water salute.
Sichuan Airlines will now operate three weekly flights, bridging the gap between Chengdu and the Maldives, joining the ranks of other Chinese airlines operating flights to this enchanting destination. Among them are Beijing Capital, offering weekly charter flights, and China Eastern, providing weekly scheduled flights every Saturday.
The resumption of Sichuan Airlines' operations at Velana International Airport comes after a gap of 7 long years, with the last flight taking place on 23rd March 2016. This development is expected to have a profound impact on Maldives tourism and economic growth. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary closure of China's borders, the Chinese market played a pivotal role in driving the Maldives' tourism industry. Since the reopening of its borders earlier this year, Chinese tourism has steadily increased, now ranking as the fourth largest source market for the Maldives.
Renowned for its pristine beauty, picturesque landscapes, and luxurious resorts, the Maldives has always been a favored destination for Chinese travellers seeking an enchanting vacation experience. With Sichuan Airlines' resumption of flights, the Maldives is well-positioned to regain momentum in attracting Chinese tourists, further solidifying its status as an alluring global tourist hotspot.
The Maldives Airports Company, operator of Velana International Airport, remains committed to welcoming various airlines to connect the Maldives with the rest of the world. Preparations are underway for the upcoming winter season, with flights scheduled to operate from new destinations. In October, Virgin Atlantic is set to begin operations between London and Heathrow Airport, further expanding the connectivity options.
Presently, more than 40 airlines operate in the Maldives, connecting the country to over 30 destinations worldwide. The continuous efforts to enhance accessibility and connectivity demonstrate the Maldives' dedication to further developing its thriving tourism industry, offering travelers from around the globe a chance to experience the beauty and luxury of this tropical paradise
