Following a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, China reinstated flights to the Maldives earlier this year on 18th January 2023. Prior to the pandemic, the Chinese market continuously topped the charts for the Maldives and remained a dominant force in the country’s tourism industry. Since flights were resumed between destinations, more than 74,000 Chinese tourists have arrived so far according to the latest statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives.
In recent months, China has continued to move up the rankings swiftly, overtaking other prominent European markets such as Italy which stands to show the increasing popularity of the tropical paradise among the Chinese travel trade. As of now, only two Chinese airlines operate flights to the Maldives: namely Beijing Capital Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. The launching of flights from Sichuan Airlines will further strengthen air connectivity to the Maldives for Chinese travellers.
